But his servants came up and reasoned with him. "My father," they said, "if the prophet had told you to do something extraordinary, would you not have done it? All the more now, since he said to you, 'Wash and be clean,' should you do as he said." - 2nd Kings 5:13
Naaman was a powerful man and highly respected, but his leprosy shamed him. Seeking to be healed by the God of Israel, he went seeking the prophet Elisha. When he found him, he didn't quite get the answer he expected. Elisha told Naaman to bath 7 times in the river Jordan and Naaman was indignant! He didn't travel all the way there for something that hardly felt like a solution, and especially with so many other more beautiful rivers closer to home. Luckily, Naaman's soldiers convinced him to go along with it and he was healed.
Many times in life we're looking for extraordinary miracles to come our way and we overlook the magic of the simplicity around us. We want big, amazing things but God can make the smallest thing amazing. You might be praying for God to bless you financially in a huge way, but He's given you your daily bread, and many don't have that. That's a miracle. Simplicity is better even in our response to God. You might feel that eloquent words are pleasing to God, yet He's only looking to see if your hearts in it, even in plain silence. This isn't to say that extraordinary is bad and you shouldn't always try for the best, but we should always remember that God can turn anything into extraordinary.
Today's Prayer:
Father, open my eyes to all of the blessings You give me. Manage my expectations so that I may appreciate quality and not quantity when it comes to You and Your ways. In Jesus' Name we pray, amen.
