And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. - Matthew 18:3-4
To be honest, I would like to think of myself as a humble person, but I don't think I am. I know this because on occasions when I'm corrected, I feel something stir up inside of me, almost ready to burst and defend myself. Even if I'm wrong, I can't quite let the other person get the last word… especially if I do happen to be right.
We're quick to point out to others what they do wrong, but Jesus asks us to take a look at ourselves first. Although we might not be prideful people, we're not humble either. It's hard to have people critique us and tell us when we're wrong or need to work on something. I'm not referring to someone just being mean or mocking us, I'm talking about someone pointing out a flaw. Besides it being hard to accept, it's even harder to keep shut about it because it hurts our ego to not retaliate. Someone with a humble heart would listen and take in the critique, not respond back and work on improving themselves. We have to bring ourselves down so God can be the One to bring us up.
Today's Prayer:
Instead of a regular prayer, practice humility for God's sake and for the sake of your soul. When someone points out a flaw or something you've done wrong, try remaining silent and not firing back at the person with any kind of defense. Try your best to take it in and ask the Lord how that critique can make you a better person.
