The Body of Christ

"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore, glorify God in your body." - 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

I know quite a few people who refuse to drive other people's cars because they do not want to be responsible for any damage done while driving. We should all take this attitude when it comes to what we do with our bodies. St. Paul wasn't kidding when he wrote that we were bought at a price - we were bought by Jesus' death upon the cross, which won for us the possibility of one day being resurrected with Him in soul and body if we accept. So, this body of ours isn't to be used for experimenting or debauchery - it is what houses the Holy Spirit of God who sustains us until we're called home. Anyone who truly sees the value in our bodies as the temple of the Holy Spirit will never defile this temple with drunkenness, drugs, or sexual immorality. The Holy Spirit flees from these things because it is incompatible with the nature of God!

Here, for anyone who is serious about their relationship with God, a line must be drawn. Do you choose your own freedom, to do with your body as you wish, or, do you put all of your effort into preserving the gift of your body and the Holy Spirit within you so that you may grow in Jesus and reap the rewards and blessings of the children of God? Paul tells us here in Corinthians that we must glorify God with our bodies - if we profess with our lips that Jesus is Lord, but use our bodies for sin, which one is speaking the truth? There can be no division. Either we belong, body and soul to Christ, or we don't.

Today's Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You ask us to give ourselves entirely to You because You did the same for us. You paid the price for our salvation, please make our hearts grateful for this gift and able to respond to Your call to holiness. Open our eyes to what needs to change within us. In Your Name we pray, amen.
