“Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven" - Matthew 18:3
I've been making a conscious effort to treat my two children (3 years old and 19 months old) as children belonging to God and entrusted to me for safekeeping. I know He's going to ask me one day about them and how I taught them about faith. In the morning, when we wake up we pray and all through the day I'll remind them about Jesus. I found a really cute video on YouTube for the song "Jesus Loves Me," and I play it for them every night. Tonight, as I was putting them to sleep, my 19 month old starts singing "Yes, Jesus loves me,... yes, Jesus loves me," and it was the cutest thing in the world! I gave him a huge kiss and then my 3 year old got jealous and said, "No! Jesus loves me!" I explained to him that Jesus loves everyone but he wasn't happy to hear that at all, "No! Me!" he would say.
I was so struck by that because as adults, we tend to think the opposite, don't we? We feel abandoned and forgotten by God. We are never first to claim the victory that already belongs to us as this little child did! Yet, the bible is full of references where God, despite sin after sin, continually pours out His love for us. Even the hairs on our head are numbered, Jesus tells us in Luke chapter 12, and we still have trouble accepting His love! I know because I also struggle with this, but my faith tells me it's the enemy trying to keep my walls up. So, what do I do? I shut off the negative voice in quiet prayer and just allow for the love of God enter my heart.
Today's Prayer:
Lord Jesus, help me to be like a little child and never question Your love. Help me to know that You created me out of love and in love will keep me always. Keep my heart pure and innocent so that I can experience the joy of that love forever. In Your Name we pray, amen.
