"So then faith comes from hearing." - Romans 10:17
Isn't it horrible when you get a really annoying song stuck in your head? You don't even like the song but it just eats away at your head until you're singing it in the shower and humming it at work. This goes to show how listening to something you might not even like affects you, much more with something you do enjoy. Now, imagine how cursing and foul language, or other malicious things affect us, seeping not only into our minds, but our hearts and souls as well. How about vulgar and disrespectful music, movies, and television shows we allow ourselves to listen to… can you honestly say it hasn't affected you? Do you or do you not find yourself repeating the same language after being exposed to it or much worse, becoming accepting of it as if it isn't a big deal at all.
So, how do we combat this and reverse the damage? As Saint Paul tells us, faith comes from hearing! Just like we expose ourselves to what's toxic to the development of our souls we need to expose ourselves to the Word of God. Do away with what's evil and offensive and instead turn your ears to what's inspiring and edifying. Don't allow the vulgarity, malicious gossip, and insults that are so common nowadays every where we turn to become normal in your lives. Focus on God. Focus on love. Focus on becoming a purer person by guarding what you let in through your ears and listen to what God has to say to you.
Today's Prayer:
Lord, I listen to so many things during the day. I listen to cursing, to insults, to gossip, to all kinds of words that destroy instead of build. Guard my ears and help me to surround myself with words that do me good and lead me closer to You. In Your Name we pray, amen.
