"Rejoice, O young man, while you are young and let your heart be glad in the days of your youth. Follow the ways of your heart, the vision of your eyes; Yet understand that as regards all this God will bring you to judgment." - Ecclesiastes 11:9
In the book of Deuteronomy, God tells His people through Moses that He sets before them two paths - one full of life and prosperity if we remain close to Him, and the other death if we choose to sin and turn away. This truth becomes apparent as we become older and have opportunities to reminisce and see what we've done with our lives. We can look back and see how certain decisions were key to how our lives turned out. We can feel confident in reflecting on how a good decision brought blessings to our lives, and it can be quite sad to look back painfully at a situation we should have thought through more clearly.
The thing about God's laws is that He doesn't impose them so that we don't have fun. On the contrary, He put them in place to protect us from committing sins that will hurt us. We're the ones that suffer, even for years, because of mistakes we've made in the past. God tries to safeguard us from that. He wants us to enjoy our youth and all the things that come from being young, but that doesn't mean we have to get involved in things that will end up hurting us and our futures. It's important to keep the lesson of this verse in our hearts and minds, to have fun and follow our hearts, but always remember that we will one day give an account to God, especially because we are the ones who have to live with the consequences of all of our actions.
Today's Prayer:
Jesus, put in me Your Spirit so that I can choose what I do with my life wisely. Put good people in my path with good hearts so that in times of joy we may rejoice without the influence of sin. Help me to remember that each of my actions and decisions shapes my future, and that I am accountable to the Father. In Your Name we pray, amen.
