Wisdom

"O sons of men, how long will you harden your hearts? How long will you delight in deceit? How long will you love falsehood? Search your heart when you are in bed, and be still. Offer the sacrifice commanded by the law and put your trust in the Lord your God." - Psalm 4:3,5-6

I picture an old man - full of experience and knowledge - saying these words to someone young, someone who still has many paths to walk in front of them. These words are full of wisdom… so profound and still so simple. We fill up the time of our youth with the passing things and turn our hearts away from what really matters. And we really do enjoy the things that do us harm… the things we know we shouldn't be doing. The worst part is the excuses we make for why we don't look for the Lord. It's too hard, we tell ourselves, or, it's just not for me… yet, our effort should be the sacrifice mentioned in this psalm. We chase after meaningless things so many times, but if we are truly wise, although we might not feel the call to follow God with all our heart, we should make the sacrifice because we know it is the only thing that matters in life… and that the only other things that matter, like family and friends, were given to us by God so we should feel even more indebted to Him. If we take the time to stop, and search our hearts in bed when everything is quiet, maybe we'll be blessed enough to put our lives into perspective and try to live each day according to the wisdom of God, instead of the false, empty wisdom of the world.

Today's Prayer:
Lord Almighty, search my heart and make known to me Your power. Show me how small I am so that I never allow myself to think that I am more than I am, but to always know that I am Your servant and You are my Lord. Never let me lose sight of Your place in my life. In Your Name we pray, amen.
