"Look, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my call and opens the door, I will come in to him and have supper with him, and he will be with me." - Revelation 3:20
Last night, like on a few other occasions, I've touched upon people who pick God up when they need Him - when things are bad - and just as quickly drop Him when things are better. The reason I do this is because it really, really bothers me. And it isn't that God doesn't help these people; my problem is that then they never really get to know who God is. This is the difference between being brought up Christian and actually knowing God.
I was speaking with a friend of mine about this (shout out to Johnny Handsome!) and he said something that really stuck with me. We can know pieces of God and what He can do for us when we pray, but unless we make Him a part of every minute of every day, we will never experience the beautiful extent of it. Johnny said that God has manners and it's so true! The reality is that Jesus stands at the door and knocks, waiting for us to open that door. He created us, but we have to invite Him in. He will never push Himself on us. That's why when we're down and pray, He comes through for us since we opened the door to Him… but the next day, unless we continue to let Him in, He's going to give us space. It's not a one time thing. It takes a lot of effort, but it's so worth it.
This morning, I opened the door to Jesus and asked Him to come in. This afternoon, I opened the door to Jesus and asked Him to come in. Tonight I'll do it again and tomorrow the same thing because I need Him to keep on working in every little aspect of my life, and because I don't want Him to go away or take Him for granted… and especially because I really want to know HIM and not just what He can do for me.
Today's Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You stand at my door and knock, and tonight I want to ask You to not only come in, but make Your home in my heart. I have many things I need to change and many worries on my mind. I want to give them all to You, knowing that if You are always with me, then You will be transforming me each second of every day, and not just when it's convenient for me.
