"The boat was very far from land, dangerously rocked by the waves for the wind was against it. At daybreak, Jesus came to them walking on the lake. And they cried out in fear. But at once Jesus said to them, 'Courage! Don't be afraid. It's me!' Peter answered, 'Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you walking on the water.' Jesus said to him, 'Come.' And Peter got out of the boat, walking on the water to go to Jesus. But, in face of the strong wind, he was afraid and began to sink. So he cried out, 'Lord, save me!' Jesus immediately stretched out his hand and took hold of him, saying, 'Man of little faith, why did you doubt?'" - Matthew 14:24-31
How could a fisherman forget how to swim? Peter must have grown up by that lake and learned to swim when he was very little. His father was probably a fisherman too, so he must have known the in's and out's of the water like the back of his hand, including how to get by in the storms that brew over the lake. So, how could he panic like that? Forgetting what was second nature to him and allowing himself to collapse?
How could we forget how good God has been? From when we were little He has been our protector, our Father in Heaven. He got us out of those binds we really needed help with, even if we hadn't been to church in a while. He was there when we really needed comforting, help with a relative, a friend, a new job, even new hopes. So, how could we forget how faithful He is when we find ourselves facing a new problem? Like Peter, we forget what we know with certainty, that God never changes and will always be there for us. Don't panic. Don't allow fear and the negativity around you to shake your confidence in what God is doing/ will do for you.
What you're facing now isn't too big for Him to fix this time around. God is always faithful… don't forget that. Forget about what you see around you and focus on the God who has always been there for you before because He's still there for you right now. Listen to Jesus' words, 'Courage! Don't be afraid!'
Today's Prayer:
God, thank You for always being there for me when I need You. I panic easily and think that this time You won't be there for me, or maybe this problem is too big for You, but nothing is bigger than You and Your faithfulness to me. Never let me forget that. In Jesus' Name we pray, amen.
