"Jesus sat down opposite the Temple treasury and watched the people dropping money into the treasury box; and many rich people put in large offerings. But a poor widow also came and dropped in two small coins. Then Jesus called His disciples and said to them, 'Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all those who gave offerings. For all of them gave from their plenty, but she gave from her poverty and put in everything she had, her very living.'" - Mark 12:41-44
I think this reading from the Gospel of Mark pretty much sums up why I feel so sinful at times… because I know I can do more for God and I choose not to. We see the great Godly people like Mother Theresa and think we could never do what she did and don't even consider trying because it's unattainable, but she was able to give that because it was within her capacity. But I don't think that you and I could honestly tell ourselves we give to God all that we can. I think our conscience can tell us right now that we are falling short of what we can do.
Jesus observed as rich people gave a lot of money into the offering, but maybe to them, that was the equivalent of a few nickels and dimes. Then Jesus watched as a poor widow gave in two small coins, and to her, that was worth millions. And this is what Jesus really asks, that we give what is in our capacity to give, not give the scraps that don't cost us much. Seriously, let's look inside ourselves, can't we do more? Can't we honestly try a little harder? Can't we give Him just a little more time and try to fight temptation a little bit better? Just like with these people making their offerings, I know Jesus is watching and He knows when we are really giving of ourselves.
Today's Prayer:
Jesus, I can do more for You. I can give more time, I can be kinder, I can try harder to do Your will. Please give me the grace and strength to follow through for You to the best of my ability. In Your Name we pray, amen.
