"As Jesus was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a large crowd, a blind beggar, Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth passing by, he began to call out, 'Son of David, Jesus, have mercy on me!' Many people scolded him and told him to keep quiet, but he shouted all the louder, 'Son of David, have mercy on me!'" - Mark 10:46-48
I want to be like this blind beggar! He knew what to do to get Jesus' attention and he didn't let anyone or anything get in his way. He shouted so loud that Jesus called him over and restored his sight. If you're like me, there are a lot of things you're asking Jesus for that you haven't seen delivered yet, so we need to be like this beggar. How do we do this? First of all, we have to be available to the Word of God. Sometimes we want God to show us signs and for God to come get us, but this blind beggar never saw miracles. He spent his time on the roadside, waiting for this Jesus of Nazareth, who he had only heard about, to pass by. Do we spend our time where Jesus is, waiting for Him? If not, we need to do something about that. As soon as the beggar heard it was Jesus, he began to call out to him for help. He screamed and he yelled, determined to get his attention. But he didn't yell just anything out, he called Jesus "Son of David," meaning that although he had never met Jesus before, he already believed that Jesus was the Messiah, the promised One from the line of King David. The beggar worship Jesus before he even met Him! Sometimes we think we know Jesus well and never give Him the honor He deserves. The beggar also screamed, "have mercy on me," which I'm sure moved Jesus with compassion. We can be too proud at times, or think we deserve things from God, but the Lord only looks at and listens to pure hearts. The beggar's heart was pure because he recognized that he was before the power and glory of the Lord and needed to subject himself to Jesus' mercy. Last and not least, the beggar didn't let anyone shut him up. He knew what he wanted and by his determination, he proved his faith to Jesus. He had people all around him trying to shut him up and get him out of the way, but he kept trying until Jesus had no choice but to meet him.
Are you like the beggar? Have you put yourself in a position to be blessed by the Lord by being close to His Word? Have you given Jesus His place and recognize Him to be your Lord and Savior? Have you humbled yourself before Him, asking for His great mercy in your life? And have you ignored all the obstacles, pushing forward to get to Jesus? This is the ONLY way to reach Him, to receive the answers to our prayers!
Today's Prayer:
Lord Jesus, I humble myself before You and recognize You as Lord of my life and my soul. You are the Most High and all goodness comes from You. Please, have pity on me and listen to my requests. You alone are my hope, please don't turn me away empty-handed. Let my faith be fruitful. In Your Name we pray, amen.
