"The Lord's eyes are upon those who fear Him, upon those who trust in His loving-kindness." - Psalm 33:18
I think that people who can't look you in the eyes have something to hide. There's a part of them they're keeping guarded so they don't have the openness or freedom to look you in the eyes or allow you to really look at them. And if you're having a conversation and this happens, then they're obviously preoccupied with what they don't want you to see. How wonderfully different is it then when you come across someone who is open and lays everything out on the table for you so that you could really get to know them and they can get to know you? I think this is the way it is with God and that's why the psalmist says that the eyes of the Lord are upon those who trust in Him. His eyes are upon them, not because they're better than other people, but because they're making that direct eye contact with God. They see God and God sees them clearly. They're not holding anything back from God and because of that, God has an open invitation to work wonders in their lives. But then there are the people who are guarded. They don't make that direct eye contact with God because they're looking elsewhere… at the sin they don't want anyone to see… at their own hands because they rely only on themselves to get through situations. Although they need the help, they're telling God, "no, I'm good… I can do this on my own and I don't need your help." There's nothing to keep from God because all we are, even our most vulnerable points, are open for Him to see… it's a matter of looking up so that He knows we are looking only towards Him and waiting on Him.
Today's Prayer:
Father in Heaven, to You I lift up my eyes because I know You see all that I am. I invite You to come in and help me, heal me, guide me through everything You see. Allow me to always look up to You. In Jesus' Name we pray, amen.
