"Humility comes before honor." - Proverbs 15:33
I always thought of myself as a pretty humble person. I really don't think too highly of myself, I don't need the latest things, nor do I feel the need to flaunt anything I own. But then I saw my pride rearing its ugly head in an area I never thought of before… I cannot stand to be corrected. Has this ever happened to you? Let's say someone comes over to you to tell you something you already know… like the annoying guy at work who is always walking around kinda smug… what if he came over to explain to you how to do something that you've already done a million times? Would you respond to him with a bit of an attitude and tell him you already know all of that? That's what I used to do. But that's not what Jesus would have done and it's Jesus who I need to be like. Jesus would have smiled and let this person teach Him all over again. Why? Because by not allowing ourselves to be corrected we are demonstrating that our pride won't allow for us to not know something. Our pride wants to quickly defend us and make us seem smarter. But humility in a person helps us accept that we sometimes don't have all the answers and that we are open enough to accept correction, not only from our superiors, but also from God and those who are in "lower" circumstances than us. So the next time you're put into a similar situation, keep your lips sealed and offer the correction up to the Lord. Your humility will mean so much to Him who knows your heart.
Today's Prayer:
Father in Heaven, thank You for showing me the parts of me that need work. Give me not only the gift of humility but also the circumstances to be able to practice it. In Jesus' Name we pray, amen.
