God, The Provider

"O God, two things I beg of You, do not deny me them before I die. Keep lying and falsehood away from me, give me neither poverty nor riches. Give me just as much food as I need lest, satisfied, I deny You and say, 'Who is Yahweh?' Or else, out of necessity, I steal and profane the name of my God." - Proverbs 30:7-9

With everything going on on Wall Street, things are pretty scary financially speaking. There are going to be a lot of jobs lost and people are already struggling to pay their mortgages. During times like these we tend to look more to God for support and this is a great verse for us to focus our minds around. We learn two things from this verse: 1. God is the provider of all financial resources. The writer asks Him to provide the food He needs and so we should depend on God to provide for us. 2. Respect for God is more important than having the resources we need. In order to be good in life, God needs to be made a priority because if we have too much, we tend to think we are self-sufficient and lose sight of our need for God, and if we feel strained, we could offend God by lying, cheating, or stealing.

The bottom line is that God provides what we need when we learn to depend on Him. More important than our survival, is our relationship with Him. As Jesus said in His Sermon on the Mount, set your heart first on the Kingdom and righteousness of God and all else will be given to you.

Today's Prayer:
Father, You are my Provider. Have mercy on me and show me that You take care of me. Do away with my worries and fears, replacing them with confidence in You. In Jesus' Name we pray, amen.
