"Unless the Lord builds the house, in vain do its builders labor. Unless the Lord guards the city, in vain does the guard stay awake." - Psalm 127:1
We all want to be good people. We all want to do the right thing. But in trying to be good people, we need to recognize that it is God alone who makes us good. I've heard people say that they don't kill, they don't cheat, etc,. but there are so many evil things that we are guilty of. Everynight I try to do an examination of conscience, retracing my steps throughout the day to think about where I have sinned, and I have to say, I mess up a lot! If you really examine your own minds, you'll realize how evil we really are at heart. You'll take notice of all the subtle ways we try to put ourselves before others, of the ways we judge people instantly, of the ways we're quick to point the finger without looking at our own shortcomings. Do you realize how evil these things are before the eyes of God? And the worst part of it is that most of us don't even want to be like this. I can't tell you how badly I wish I could automatically like everyone I meet, and how I wish I could say I don't judge people, but I do. It just spills out of me. So I have to ask myself, how could there be people who think that on their own, they are good? That by themselves, they have a pure heart without need of asking God for help?
I want to urge you to watch yourself and realize that our consciences can only be formed by God. Do not depend on yourself to be good because unfortunately, we tend to choose evil. It is always easier for us to criticize, than to correct in love, to turn our back to someone who we consider annoying, than to lend a hand. Therefore, unless the Lord allows you to be good, to build up the house of your soul, you can't do anything for yourself. Unless the Lord guards the city, watches over your soul and strengthens you during occasions of sin, you will keep falling into bad habits. The bible tells us many times that God is generous and gives to anyone who asks, so please, ask Him to build up your soul, so that you can truly be a good person who walks in His light.
Today's Prayer:
Lord, I want to be good, but I keep falling down on my knees. On my own, I choose evil. I choose to not act in Your love. Please strengthen me, speak to my heart so that I can follow Your path and be perfect and righteous as You are perfect and righteous. In Jesus' Name we pray, amen
