"Jesus said to him, 'Why do you say: If you can? All things are possible for one who believes.' Immediately the father of the boy cried out, 'I do believe, but help the little faith I have.'" - Mark 9:23
After trying and looking for every possible solution, the father of a very sick boy brought his son to the Lord for healing. The father was in complete anguish to see his son in such a horrible situation. This is the anguish we experience in so many areas of our lives. There are among us fathers and mothers suffering over their children. People suffering with illnesses that are life threatening. Marriages that are falling apart. Anger. Hate. Addictions to alcohol and drugs, and families that are being torn up over it. So much hurt. So much sadness. So much suffering. So many things we keep inside because we don't want anyone to know. Yet, this father brought his son to the Lord. He brought him because he believed what people were saying about Him; that this Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of God. So why not? If others were being healed, why not? And standing before the Lord, the man had to make up his mind about his own faith. He brought his son before Jesus, but does he believe? You hear what is said about Jesus from others, but do you believe?
When your hurt is so unbearable and the only solution you have is to trust in God, do you believe? In His presence, do you believe that Jesus can do what you want Him to do? What you need Him to do? And your heart just hurts thinking about it… the pain and suffering we encounter in our families, in our relationships, in ourselves is so great that nothing and no one can help - except one person… the Lord who is standing in front of us and we must answer the question - do we actually believe?
Sometimes we have nothing left but to throw ourselves at the mercy of the Lord and cry out to Him: I believe, but please help the little faith that I have!
Today's Prayer:
Jesus, my God, I believe but sometimes the problem seems so big and the hurt is so big that I forget that You are much bigger. I lose sight of You and of my faith. Please help the little faith I have and show me how You can cause the smallest things to grow. In Your Name we pray, amen.
